Receipts, read and filed

The fastest way in. A minute a week keeps the books current; here is the minute.

Snap it, or pick a photo, a PDF or a statement.

Point the camera at the receipt. Plainbooks finds the edges, squares the paper and keeps a clean copy. Receipts you already have as photos or PDFs work too, and so does a CSV from your bank or card.

Your iPhone reads it before anything is sent.

The shop, the date and the total are read on the phone, from the full-resolution original. A weak read (no total, or two that disagree) is flagged, never guessed.

Plainbooks suggests the business and the category.

With its Schedule C line, and how much of it counts. Weak reads get a second look from AI and come back marked “read by AI, please check”. Your own rules always win. You check and save.

It lands in the right book and the right year.

Filed under the business, the category and the year, with the receipt attached. Offline? It waits in the outbox and uploads itself when you’re back, even if the app is closed.

Reports that add up as you go

Net profit against the same days last year, a profit and loss you can share as a PDF, cash flow with runway, and the tax view: totals by Schedule C line, how much to set aside, and a reminder a week before each estimated-tax date. Every number is plain arithmetic, checked in tests; the AI never computes one.

One folder for your accountant

Close the year with a checklist and a lock, then export a business for a year, or everything: the profit and loss, the transactions and categories as CSV, every document, and the receipt photos if you want them. A zip in Files, ready to share. No login for your accountant, nothing to install.

Every business, kept apart

One LLC or several, up to 10 books, plus a personal book if you want one. Each has its own categories, accounts and years, and its own place in the switcher. Paid for something with your own card? Plainbooks records the expense and your owner contribution together, so the books still balance.

Every transaction, filed

Income, expenses, refunds, owner draws and contributions, transfers, tax payments. Each one filed by kind, category and account, split across categories when it needs to be, moved between books as a linked pair. Plainbooks knows which of them count in profit and which never do, so the reports are right without a second set of books.

Also in the app

  • Statements and payouts

Bring in a CSV from your bank or card; Plainbooks suggests which column is which and shows a preview before anything is sent. Payout reports from Stripe, Shopify and the App Store are read as they are, fees and refunds included.

  • Documents

Formation papers, the EIN letter, the operating agreement, 1099s and bank statements, kept with the business they belong to and included in every export.

  • Rules

Correct a shop’s category twice and Plainbooks offers a rule. From then on it files that shop your way, ahead of any suggestion.

  • Year end

A checklist for the year, then a lock. A locked year is read-only; unlocking asks for Face ID and a reason, and both are kept in the history.

  • Partners

A multi-member LLC gets each member’s share, guaranteed payments and a partners’ capital report, so the split is never a spreadsheet.

  • Offline

Capture receipts anywhere. They wait in the outbox and upload when you’re back, even if the app has been closed for days.

  • Widgets

This month’s or this year’s profit on the Home Screen, for one business or all of them, and a Scan receipt button for the Lock Screen, Control Center and the Action button.

  • Seven languages

English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Vietnamese and Korean, with the categories and the Help & FAQ in each.

Your books are yours.

Read on your phone first

Receipts are read on the iPhone, from the original. The AI sees the text, and the photo only when the phone’s read was weak. It suggests; it never changes data and never computes a number you see.

No bank connections, no tracking

Plainbooks only knows what you give it. There are no ads, no analytics in the app, and nothing sold or shared. Sign in with Apple or Google; no password to keep.

Kept in North America, deleted when you say

Files are private and downloaded only through signed, expiring links. Delete the account in Settings and every row and file is gone within 24 hours.

Questions

Is Plainbooks a personal-finance app?
No. It keeps the books of one or more small businesses. A personal book comes along as a convenience, so an expense that turns out to be business can be moved in one tap, and it never mixes into business totals.
Does it connect to my bank?
No. Plainbooks only knows what you give it: receipts you photograph, statements you import from your bank or card, and payout reports from Stripe, Shopify and the App Store. There are no bank logins to hand over.
Which kinds of business?
Single-member LLCs (Schedule C) and multi-member LLCs taxed as partnerships, with each member’s share. Categories follow the Schedule C lines; your accountant can check them. S corporations and payroll aren’t covered.
Is it double-entry?
No. Plainbooks keeps the books the way a small business actually runs them: every transaction filed by kind, category and account, with the owner’s money kept apart from profit. Your accountant gets clean totals and the receipts behind them.
What happens if I stop paying?
Nothing disappears. Your books become read-only: you can still view, search and export everything. They stay that way for 30 days after an unpaid trial and 6 months after a paid plan ends, with warnings before anything is deleted.
Is it tax advice?
No. Plainbooks adds up what you filed, by the lines on the form. What you deduct and what you owe is between you and your accountant.
